The Township Entrepreneurial Ecosystem research report
presents an in-depth exploration of the lived experiences
of entrepreneurs operating within South Africa’s township
economies. This research, conducted by the Gordon Institute
of Business Science (GIBS) Entrepreneurship Development
Academy at the University of Pretoria, with funding support
from the Walmart Foundation, aims to illuminate the unique
challenges and opportunities faced by these entrepreneurs. As
an entrepreneurial University, one of our strategic objectives
is to make a substantial social impact, especially within
marginalised communities. This study underscores our
