Earlier this year, the JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon made a town hall speech at an employee event in Ohio that went viral after he made his blunt assessment of a topic that is dividing employers and employees, older and younger generations: the future of the workplace. In a leaked recording that captured his blistering critique of remote working, Dimon bemoaned everything from bureaucratic bloat and the lack of focus during virtual meetings to colleagues who were unreachable on Fridays and people multitasking while on Zoom calls. His dislike of remote working is shared by employers such as Deloitte, whose US tax practice has started to include office attendance in the performance reviews that help determine employee bonuses. The firm argues that its model is “designed for clients, businesses, team leaders and professionals to co-locate.” Donald Trump also favours a return to office working.
